Back in the days of the N95 I used a Russian mapping application called SmartComGPS, along with OziExplorer and Memory-map on various WinCE devices.

In recent years I’ve been using OruxMaps for Android, and, while frequently trying others for comparison, I feel nothing comes close.

On the desktop PC I’ve used OziExplorer, Memory-map, and Fugawi. These days it’s just OziExplorer on Linux (under WINE)

The problem with all these applications is the size and cost of the maps. Enter Open Street Map (OSM). So now I can get the whole of the UK in under 500mb, for FREE, thanks to OSM, Mapsforge and OpenAndroMaps. (At least I can for the phone – on the PC I have to run Android-x86 in a VM. - EDIT  There's now an application called Atlas written in Java that can be run on either Linux or Windows. Atlas development has a way to go but is showing real potential.)

There is just one, small, irritating problem – the OSM colours are hideous. For years I’ve been using Ordnance Survey maps – from old paper inch to the mile hand me downs from my Dad to the latest digital offerings direct from the OS or through web apps such as where’s the path.

So, this is my small effort to make OSM vector maps resemble the OS ones – It's very much a work in progress, and if anyone wants to help, please download the .xml file and symbols/patterns, edit it and mail it back to me at Pete at this domain. (Or use the contact form - will try get attachments working soon)

Here’s some screen shots of what I’ve done so far....

The maps can be used on Android devices running any of the apps listed here: http://code.google.com/p/mapsforge/wiki/MapsforgeApplications (I can highly recommend OruxMaps and the instructions below are for that app)

To use this theme download the map you require from OpenAndroMaps and save it to the Maps directory on your Android device (configurable through OruxMaps).

Download the OS-Style.xml file and associated symbols and patterns here, and extract the zip to the mapstyles dir on your Android device (configurable through OruxMaps)

Refresh the maps db from OruxMaps (Globe icon in top right hand corner > switch map > refresh icon in top right hand corner, and select the new map)

Then from the Android menu key, select Tweaks > Mapsforge Style > OS-Style.xml and you should be set to go...

If you find this theme useful please consider making a donation to openandromaps or oruxmaps - They've done all the hard work - I've just tweaked a bit of xml.....

Update 14/03/14 - Added National and Regional cycle paths - left off local ones as I felt they made the map too cluttered - I'd rather use overlays for those. Think I've got bridleways right now too. Also changed the Pub icon from the wine glass to PH - though half of me wants to use a beer glass icon ;-) Will add new screen shots later.....
Also OS-Style.xml available here (right click and save as) without the icon sets. (Or here as zip)

Udate 17/03/14 - Fixed issue where footpath "dots" merged into a red line at high zoom levels - Thanks to Keith for pointing that out.
